What is the Junior League?

Our mission statement best describes what the Junior League is: The Junior League of Kansas City, Missouri is an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers.

How do I become a member of the Junior League?

The Junior League of Kansas City, Missouri conducts Prospective Member Meetings several times a year usually in January, February and March.

Membership in the League is open to all women who demonstrate an interest in and commitment to voluntarism. The Junior League reaches out to women of all races, religions and national origins.

How does the Junior League raise money?

The Junior League of Kansas City, Missouri has two fundraisers.

Our annual Holiday Mart is a fun and exciting event where retailers from around the country gather in Kansas City for a four-day shopping event at the Overland Park Convention Center. The mart is open to the public and tickets may be purchased in advance by calling 816-444-2112, on this website or at the door.

The Junior League Resale Boutique is located at 63rd Street and Troost in Kansas City, Missouri is a resale shop featuring gently used merchandise and is open year round.

Why does the Junior League raise money?

The money raised by the Junior League of Kansas City, Missouri is largely given back to the community in support of community programming in our chosen impact area, Children's Literacy.

In addition to funding, hundreds of trained volunteers contribute to community efforts both in the area of Children's Literacy as well as other areas of need.

Who does the League provide assistance for?

Assistance to individuals is not available. Only not-for-profit agencies with 501(c) (3) status within the five-county metropolitan area can apply for grants. Grants are not awarded for religious purposes.

How do I apply for a grant?

The Junior League of Kansas City, Missouri provides three types of community assistance. Requests are evaluated by different groups of League volunteers as follows:

Who is eligible for a grant?

The following requirements apply to all requests for assistance. Each type of assistance requires additional information. Please refer to each category for these details

  • Any 501 (c) (3) tax exempt organization may receive assistance
  • Organizations must be located in and provide services in the 5 counties in the Kansas City metropolitan area (Jackson, Clay, Platte in Missouri; Wyandotte, and Johnson in Kansas).
  • Assistance is not available for individuals, religious purposes, political causes or fundraising

Every effort is made to evaluate each request in a timely manner. Each request will receive a written response from the Junior League

How does the League decide which organizations to support with funding and volunteers?

The Junior League of Kansas City, Missouri has chosen Children's Literacy as the area it would most like to impact with funding and volunteers. The League continues to explore the different aspects of Children's Literacy and invites different organizations and agencies involved in this arena to help us help the children of Kansas City.
