The Hooked on Books Drive was September 29th through October 31, 2009. The winner of the school challenge was Clear Creek Elementary in Shawnee, KS with a total of 3,078 books collected! The school won a celebration with Kansas City Chiefs Sean Ryan, Tight End #89.
The Junior League’s Hooked on Books program is a city-wide book drive with the goal of getting books into the hands of at-risk children. The program was started in 1998 by the Kansas City Star, and over the past 12 years, more than 760,000 books have been collected and distributed to local schools and children throughout the
The Junior League approached The Kansas City Star in 2002 to offer volunteer assistance for the 2003 year in the collection and sorting of books. The Junior League actually took over this part of the process and The Kansas City Star promoted the event. The book drive will focus on the school challenge, encouraging schools to collect books for the opportunity to meet a Kansas City Chief. Books will then be collected at Junior League Headquarters and Rainy Day Books.
The Junior League of Kansas City, Missouri is a charitable organization of 1,400 trained volunteers who have been serving the Kansas City community for 95 years. It is one of the nation’s oldest and largest Junior Leagues and has committed to a ten-year focus on children’s literacy efforts in the Kansas City area.
Hooked on Books is one of a dozen local literacy programs that Junior League volunteers will commit time and money to this year. The Junior League is looking forward to continued success in the years to come.
