CONGRATULATIONS TO CLEAR CREEK ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IN SHAWNEE, KS FOR WINNING THE 2009 HOB SCHOOL CHALLENGE! They collected 3,078 books!
All Kansas City Metropolitan Area Schools are invited to join the Hooked On Books School Challenge. The rules are simple – collect new or gently used books appropriate for children ages 0-14. The school that collects the most books wins a visit by the Hooked On Books celebrity spokesperson from the Kansas City Chiefs.
All the time spent on collecting books counts towards the President’s Volunteer Service Award.
Some ideas to get the kids involved are:
- Have a dress down day – if a child brings in a book, they get to dress down, or wear a special item of clothing not usually allowed.
- Inter-school challenge – Have a reward for the class donating the most books to Hooked On Books.
- Reading Challenge – Have the kids donate books after they read the book. Keep track of the number of books each child reads and reward them for every 10 books read and donated.
- Collect money for Hooked On Books – We have fund managed by Greater Kansas City Foundation where the money donated goes for books. A school can have a Hooked On Books day, with each child donating. The class with the most participation can receive special recognition at a school assembly.

To promote the program at your school, there are a few Marketing items available. A letter can be downloaded to be distributed to the children's parents to inform them of this opportunity to donate books. Posters can be obtained from the Junior League Headquarters at 9215 Ward Parkway, Kansas City, MO 64114-3307. Use the posters to promote the program on a receptacle of your choice for the children at your school to deposit the new or gently used books. A Hooked on Books ad can be downloaded to be used as a handout or posted on bulletin boards to promote the program.
